Amish Shah raises $530,000 for Congressional run from Arizona

Son of immigrant parents from India, Shah is the first Indian-American to serve in the Arizona legislature

Amish Shah, a Democratic member of the Arizona House of Representatives has raised over $530,000 from individual donors in the opening quarter of his campaign for the US Congress from the state’s 1st Congressional District.

Over 75% of these donors are from Arizona. The total above does not include any self-funding nor PAC money, the first Indian-American to serve in the Arizona legislature announced in a press release.

On April 3, Shah, who has been a member of Arizona House representing districts in the Phoenix area since 2019, announced his Congressional run for the seat currently held by Republican David Schweikert.

“I am grateful to all of the individuals who contributed to our campaign, and I hope that I can make them proud with my service,” Shah said.

“Similar to all three of my prior successful campaigns for State House, this Congressional campaign is focused on public service with our well-known and acclaimed door-to-door approach, a willingness to listen to constituent concerns, a positive message, and an emphasis on constructive dialogue.”

While the fundraising accomplishment is just the first milestone in the campaign life cycle, the impressive total represents Dr. Shah’s strength and his ability to effectively communicate his message throughout the district, the release said.

Over five years in the Arizona House of Representatives, Dr. Shah has translated his deep community engagement and broad voter relationships into actual legislation to improve the lives of the people of Arizona, it said.

During his time in the Arizona House of Representatives, Dr. Shah has had more bills signed into law than any Democrat in over a decade, the release said.

Born and raised in Chicago, Shah’s parents were engineering students who immigrated from India in the 1960s. He has also practiced medicine for over 20 years, and he is currently practicing as an Emergency Physician at Mayo Clinic of Arizona.

He has received over a dozen awards for the quality of his service, including Best Political Rising Star two years in a row from the Arizona Capitol Times, Nurses’ Hero Award from the Arizona Nurses Association, and Women’s Health Champion / Legislator of the Year from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Shah earned his undergraduate degree at Northwestern University and his medical degree at Northwestern University Medical School as part of the Honors Program in Medical Education. He received a full merit scholarship to obtain a Master’s in Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley.
