Stony Brook honors Amruta Desai with 40 Under Forty Alumni Award
Amruta G. Desai, an Indian American anesthesiologist and interventional pain physician at Stony Brook Medicine is among Brook University’s 2024 class of 40 Under Forty alumni honorees,
Desai and other winners of 40 Under Forty awards recognizing exceptional young alumni who have distinguished themselves as leaders in their communities, will be honored at a ceremony on Oct 24, at the Charles B. Wang Center.
“From providing strategic counsel to the US Food and Drug Administration during the Covid-19 public health crisis and helping to ensure veterans get the resources they need to working in the New York State Assembly and competing in the Olympics, this year’s class of honorees joins the ranks of exceptional alumni dedicated to helping their communities and addressing global issues,” according to a media release.
Desai, who holds dual degrees in business administration (MBA) and public health (MPH) from Stony Brook University, has established herself as a leader in the field of pain management.

A double board-certified in anesthesiology and pain management, she has made significant contributions to improving healthcare access for underserved populations.
Desai has also developed an operational improvement plan for a New York City medical center by employing public health measures in a cost-effective manner to increase healthcare access for an underrepresented population and to improve morbidity and mortality metrics.
She leads a clinic for interventional pain management for an underserved population on Long Island at Stony Brook University to combat the ongoing opioid epidemic.
Desai, who has a long research history with Stony Brook University with current focus on pain management, has previously Desai done research at Brookhaven National Lab. She has published in many reputable journals, is a journal reviewer, selected to multiple local and national committees, and is a question writer for the national board exam.
