Former Uber executive Anirban Kundu is joining Instacart as its chief technology officer, the online grocery delivery service company announced.

Kundu is coming to Instacart from Uber, where he was VP and Head of Engineering for Uber Delivery, according to a company release. At Uber, he spearheaded the platform’s B2B and B2C solutions, including Uber Eats and the company’s Ad Solutions.

Kundu joined Uber from Postmates, where he was responsible for Product and Engineering. Prior to Postmates, Kundu was Chief Technology Officer at Evernote and, before that, led engineering teams at companies including GoDaddy, Shazam, and Yahoo.

“At Instacart, Anirban will lead our technical team as we further expand our position as the grocery industry’s leading technology company,” the company said in a media release. “His deep understanding of multi-sided marketplaces like ours and proven track record of building scaled technical systems that can support long-term growth make him the perfect person to drive our technical vision forward.”

Today, Instacart provides its more than 1,500 retail banners with access to a suite of technology products and services that help them compete in a rapidly evolving landscape.

In addition to the Instacart marketplace, the company supports its retail and CPG partners both online and in stores, powering e-commerce experiences, fulfilling orders, digitizing brick-and-mortar stores, offering advertising solutions, and gleaning actionable insights.

“As we continue to serve millions of customers, 600,000+ shoppers, 80,000+ stores and 6,000+ brands, we’re looking forward to having Anirban’s expertise and leadership to help us realize our long-term vision of building the technologies that will power every grocery transaction,” the release stated.

In a post on LinkedIn, Kundu said he “can’t wait to partner with the Instacart team to transform the grocery industry and realize the company’s vision to power every online and in-store grocery transaction.”

He noted that the company is “at the forefront of using technology to make grocery and retail shopping more convenient and accessible for everyone.”

Kundu said he is “particularly drawn to the opportunity to lead the development of cutting-edge solutions to improve logistical efficiency, AI-powered personalization, and seamless omnichannel experiences with a talented engineering team to scale a platform that connects millions of customers with retailers and shoppers across North America.”
