Biden trails Haley, leads Ramaswamy in 2024 race: poll

President Joe Biden is trailing former President Donald Trump and former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, but leads fellow Indian American Republican Vivek Ramaswamy in several hypothetical 2024 match-ups in a new survey.

The Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll poll found that 41 percent said they would back Haley, compared to 37 percent who said they would support Biden, The Hill reported.

The poll, however, found that Biden performed better against biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, who came in at 37 percent while Biden received 39 percent.

The poll also found that 44 percent of respondents said they would vote for Trump when asked about a hypothetical match-up between him and Biden in 2024, while 40 percent said they would back the current president. A separate 15 percent said they were unsure or didn’t know.

The polling is largely unchanged from a similar Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll conducted in July, which had Trump at 45 percent and Biden at 40 percent.

When asked about a match between Biden and Sen Tim Scott (R-SC), the president received 37 percent, while Scott received 39 percent.

Still, hypothetical match-ups featured larger shares of respondents saying they didn’t know or were unsure who they would support; 21 percent in the Biden-Haley match-up and 25 percent in the Biden-Scott match-up.

The poll also found that besides Ramaswamy Biden performed better against former Vice President Mike Pence and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R).

Biden received 42 percent while Pence received 36 percent. DeSantis trailed Biden 42 percent to 38 percent.

At least 20 percent of those surveyed in each of those match-ups were unsure or didn’t know who they would back.

“Still, the close match-ups between Biden and many of the GOP candidates suggest the 2024 election could be another nail-biter,” according to the Hill.

“No question that President Joe Biden is showing lagging national poll numbers and that now multiple GOP candidates are ahead of him. This is a new development as [non-Trump] potential opponents like Haley get exposure,” said Mark Penn, the co-director of the Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll.

The Harvard CAPS-Harris Poll was conducted Sep 12-14 with 2,103 registered voters. It is a collaboration of the Center for American Political Studies at Harvard University and the Harris Poll.

Meanwhile, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has offered his full support for Vice President Kamala Harris as Biden’s running mate after some Democrats suggested Biden consider replacing her on the 2024 ticket.

Newsom was asked on CNN whether Harris, daughter of an Indian mother and an African father, is the “best person to be on the ticket” with Biden, referencing an interview last week in which Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) did not explicitly say whether she felt Harris was the best running mate for Biden.

Of course she is,” Newsom said. “Biden-Harris administration, master class in terms of performance — bipartisan deals on infrastructure, bipartisan deals on guns and debt ceiling, on the CHIPS and Science Act.”

“I mean, by definition. If I think this administration in the last 2 1/2 years has been one of the most outstanding administrations in the last few decades, and she’s a member of that administration, she gets to lay and claim credit to a lot of that success. The answer is absolutely,” he added.

Newsom was the subject of speculation at one point about whether he might run for president in 2024, but he has said he has no plans to do so and has been one of the most vocal supporters of the Biden administration in recent months, the Hill noted.
