Rituparna Sengupta stars in Suman Ghosh’s ‘Puratwan,’ the opening night feature at DCSAFF 2024.

It is that time of year again when the DC area audiences will get to celebrate wonderful independent films written, produced, and directed by, as well as starring, new and established South Asian talents. The annual DC South Asian Film Festival (better known as DCSAFF) will be held in person from September 13th to 15th and virtually from September 16th to 30th.  As always, the dynamic husband-wife duo of Manoj and Geeta Singh are at the helm of what promises to be a festival to be remembered.

Opening night will begin with a press conference with Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI), Actor Rituparna Sengupta and Director Suman Ghosh. Ghosh’s Bengali film Puratawn, starring Sharmila Tagore and Sengupta, will be the opening night movie screened.

On Day 3, audiences will be treated to the feature film Anxious, followed by the world premiere of the film NOT TONIGHT. Another wonderful package of short films will be subsequently screened, and the evening will close off with the closing night feature GUNJAL, and the world premiere of the film Andhela Ravamidhi. The festivities will continue virtually after this till the 30th with even more films being screened online.

For the DC area, what is particularly exciting is to see local talents behind and in front of the camera. Some of the films that should not be missed include: Stiched, Asura, The Devil’s Corner, Kurta Pants, Dancing with My Cells, Kevin Patel at Your Service, and Dear Pra. During the virtual festival, Dr. Nishi Chawla’s THE PEACE ACTIVISTS will also be screened. Each of these either features local artists or are directed by them and showcases wonderfully talented people we have in our midst.
