Indian American Impact, a leading political advocacy organisation of the community, has endorsed five South Asian candidates, including two of Indian origin for the Texas municipal elections on May 3.

This year, a record number of South Asian candidates are running for municipal and school board elections across the state, it noted. In Sugar Land alone – home to one of the highest concentrations of South Asians in Texas – more than 10 candidates are stepping up to lead.

“Impact is proud to announce our endorsements for a few of the incredible candidates running to make a difference in their communities,” the organization said noting “local elections often have the biggest impact on our daily lives, yet turnout and participation, especially among our communities, remains low.”

Indian American candidates supported by Impact are Sukh Kaur, who is seeking re-election to the San Antonio City Council representing District 1, and Gurvinder Singh, who is contesting for a seat on the Sachse City Council Place 6.

Kaur created history in 2023 as the first South Asian elected to the San Antonio City Council. She is the founder of EDreimagined, an organization promoting innovative school models, and has previously served as an educator and small business owner.

An immigrant, passionate educator, and small business owner, Kaur is the first South Asian to serve on the Council and a tireless advocate for public schools, economic growth, and a government that uplifts all.

During her term, she has prioritized infrastructure improvements, public safety initiatives, and affordable housing. Facing a competitive race with nine challengers, Kaur has received endorsements from key figures, including San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg and U.S. Representative Joaquin Castro.

In Sachse, Singh is challenging incumbent Matt Prestenberg for City Council Place 6. A lifelong North Texan Singh has lived in Sachse since 2014.

He holds a degree in Telecommunications from the University of Texas at Dallas and is an entrepreneur with successful ventures in real estate, construction, and insurance. Singh is also noted for his humanitarian efforts, having led over 50 global disaster relief missions as the International Humanitarian Aid director for United Sikhs.

Other South Asian candidates backed by Impact are Sakib Shaikh, San Antonio City Council District 8, Muzaffar Vohra – Sugar Land City Council At Large Position 1 and Afshi Charania – Fort Bend ISD Position 3.

Early voting began on April 22 and will continue through April 30, ahead of Election Day on May 3.
