It’s Kamala Harris’s night!
In a historic moment at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Vice President Kamala Harris will formally accept the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States on Thursday night. Harris, who is the second woman and the first woman of color to be nominated by a major party for the nation’s highest office, will address a packed convention hall, marking a significant milestone in American political history.
The convention, which spanned four days filled with speeches from political heavyweights and celebrities, will culminate with Harris’s acceptance speech. Wednesday evening featured notable addresses from Harris’s Vice Presidential pick, Tim Walz, as well as former President Bill Clinton, former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and television star Oprah Winfrey, who each emphasized the critical nature of the upcoming election.
Harris’s nomination follows a dramatic shift in the Democratic Party’s leadership dynamics after President Joe Biden announced last month that he would not seek reelection. His decision came in the wake of a disastrous debate performance, leading to a rapid consolidation of support within the party around Harris. The Vice President quickly garnered endorsements from Biden himself and other key figures within the Democratic establishment.
In her acceptance speech, Harris is expected to outline her vision for the country, focusing on unity, resilience, and recovery. She will emphasize the challenges America faces and her commitment to addressing critical issues such as climate change, healthcare, and economic recovery.
Polls now show Harris leading her Republican counterpart, former President Donald Trump, in both national and key state polls. With just 75 days left until the election, the campaign is intensifying, with Harris at the helm of the Democratic Party’s efforts to retain control of the White House.

Fellow Democrat and former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who lost to Republican Donald Trump, Harris’ opponent in November, is the only other woman ever to be nominated for president.
Harris’s historic nomination not only represents a breakthrough in terms of diversity and representation but also signifies a pivotal moment for the Democratic Party as it navigates a rapidly changing political landscape. As the election approaches, all eyes will be on Harris as she campaigns to become the first woman of color to lead the United States.
Most speakers on Wednesday pointed out the stark difference between Harris and Trump.
“In 2024, we have a clear choice: ‘we the people’ versus ‘me, myself and I,’” Clinton said, referring to Trump.
“He mostly talks about himself. So the next time you hear him, don’t count the lies. Count the I’s. Count the I’s. His vendettas, his vengeances, his complaints, his conspiracies. He’s like one of those tenors opening up before he walks out onstage … by singing me, me, me, me, me, me. When Kamala Harris is president, every day will begin with you, you, you, you.”
Walz, who electrified the audience, painted Trump as an out-of-touch politician who is looking out for only the rich.
“And we know if these guys get back in the White House, they’ll start jacking up the cost on the middle class,” he said. “They’ll repeal the Affordable Care Act. They’ll gut Social Security and Medicare, and they will ban abortion across this country with or without Congress.”
He continued, “Here’s the thing, it’s an agenda nobody asked for. It’s an agenda that serves nobody except the richest and the most extreme amongst us. And it’s an agenda that does nothing for our neighbors in need. Is it weird? Absolutely. Absolutely. But it’s also wrong and it’s dangerous. It’s not just me saying so. It’s Trump’s own people. They were with him for four years. They’re warning us that the next four years will be much, much worse.”
