Maryland’s Indian American Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller has appointed Brandon Stoneburg as the new Director of Communications in the Office of the Lieutenant Governor.

In his new role, Stoneburg will oversee communication strategy and media relations for Miller, according to a June 27 press release. He joins fellow Baltimore native Geri Royale Byrd, who was recently appointed Chief of Staff.

Stoneburg most recently served as director of communications for Baltimore City Council President Nick Mosby. He previously served as communications director for the Maryland Democratic Party and as chief of staff in the Maryland House of Delegates for Del. Anne Healey (D-Prince George’s County).

He began his career as a sports reporter in Pennsylvania after graduating from Temple University with a degree in Journalism. He went on to work with Major League Baseball’s Advanced Media Department in New York City before returning to Maryland and transitioning into public service, and holds a Master’s Degree in Government from Johns Hopkins University.

Byrd and Stoneburg bring a wealth of experience in state and local public service and will advance and amplify the lieutenant governor’s portfolio, the release stated.

“Brandon and Geri will be incredible assets to my office and to the state we serve,” Miller said. “They bring a dynamic resume of experience and a fresh perspective, and I’m so excited to have them on our team as we start this new chapter.”

The 10th Lt. Governor of Maryland, Miller is the second woman to serve as Lt. Governor and the first woman of color and immigrant elected to statewide office in Maryland.

As Lt. Governor, her policy profile includes matters relating to transportation, mental health, and STEM equity. She serves as chair of the Governor’s Work Zone Safety Work Group, dedicated to making highway work zones safer and protecting the lives of workers, motorists, and law enforcement.

Miller also chairs Maryland’s first Council on Interfaith Outreach, which convenes faith leaders from across religions and across the state of Maryland to bridge divides, increase religious tolerance, end hate, and better serve all communities.

Born in Andhra Pradesh, India, Miller and her family immigrated to the United States when she was seven years old. The daughter of a mechanical engineer, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
