RegulatingAI, founded by Indian American Sanjay Puri, hosts congressional briefing on global AI governance
A newly established nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting diverse perspectives in the global governance of artificial intelligence has urged the US Congress to address pressing issues concerning AI regulation.
During a congressional briefing held on Capitol Hill on March 29, RegulatingAI, founded by Indian American Sanjay Puri, emphasized the importance of addressing issues such as non-US regulatory approaches to AI, ethical considerations, transparency, privacy, and international alignment. The event underscored the necessity of collaboration among stakeholders to advocate for responsible and equitable AI practices, as highlighted in a press release.

The briefing emphasized the urgency of tackling these issues and stressed the necessity of collaboration among varied stakeholders to advocate for responsible and equitable AI practices. Featuring two panel discussions, with speakers from the US, EU, India, and Africa, the event boasted a global representation.
In the first panel, Puri highlighted the significance of global harmonization in AI regulation, citing its boundary-crossing nature. “Global harmonization on AI Regulation will be very important for this transformative technology as it knows no boundaries, and we had a great discussion on what we all can learn on best practices from each other,” he said.
The second panel, moderated by Michael Taylor, Government Affairs Manager of RegulatingAI, echoed Puri’s sentiments, emphasizing the unique challenges posed by transformative technologies like AI to governments and regulators. “Transformative technologies like AI pose a particularly unique and difficult challenge for governments, public policymakers, and regulators, so [I’m] happy to have moderated such an educational panel focused on these issues of concern,” Taylor stated.

Noteworthy attendees at the briefing included Chiefs of Staff, Legislative Directors, and Legislative Assistants from various Congressional offices, along with Senior Professional Staff on key Congressional Committees. Their presence underscores the importance of these discussions as they advise key Members of Congress on significant drafts and policy matters concerning AI legislation in the United States.
Given the growing prominence of AI across industries globally, discussions and debates on its usage have become ubiquitous. In this context, standardized policies and governance roadmaps are crucial. These legislative efforts are deemed essential in shaping the future of AI regulation.
Regulating AI is a non-profit organization dedicated to policymakers, experts, and AI users interested in exploring the intersection of AI and regulation.
