Trumpiana: Bluff, bluster, bullying begets peace, but no Nobel

Trumpiana: Bluff, bluster, bullying begets peace, but no Nobel

For once, POTUS did not pick up his favorite terrific tariff bazooka. Instead, he first threatened Hamas with “all hell” if they did not fall in line. Then he dropped an F-bomb on Israel’s Bibi Netanyahu to make him stop bombing Gaza.

“I don’t know why you’re always so f…ing negative … This is a win. Take it,”Donald Trump told Netanyahu, going by a fly on the wall account by Axios,  when he voiced doubts about a peace deal that would bring home the 20 Israeli hostages believed to be still alive in Gaza.

That did it. With lots of arm-twistings, the imperious President achieved what seemed impossible only a month ago — a peace deal that may finally end the longest and deadliest war in the century-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Turning traditional diplomacy on its head, Trump was quick to announce the success of his peace plan even as negotiators including his son-in-law Jared Kushner, a self-described ‘Deal Guy,’ crossed the t’s and dotted the i’s.

As Trump prepared to travel to Egypt for an in-person signing ceremony on Sunday and later for an address at the Israeli Knesset, the ceasefire brokered by him began with Israel starting phased withdrawal of its forces from the strip’s main cities.

Trump won praise from world leaders, including India’s Narendra Modi, and at home from Democrats and Republicans alike on Capitol Hill. But that blasted Nobel Peace prize for which he had worked “truly, madly, deeply,” as a scribe put it, still eluded him.

Instead the Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded the prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado for “her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela.”

The White House was quick to criticise the committee for placing “politics over peace,” but soon changed its tune after the winner partially dedicated the prize to Trump and called him to say she accepted the prize in his honor.

“The person who actually got the Nobel Prize called today, called me, and said, ‘I’m accepting this in honor of you, because you really deserved it,’” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

“It’s a very nice thing to do. I didn’t say, ‘Then give it to me,’ though I think she might have. She was very nice.”

He also thanked pal Putin, who has steadfastly ignored his repeated pleas for peace in Ukraine, for praising him as a person who “solves complex problems, crises that last for decades” and suggesting the “award lost credibility” with the committee discussing “people who have done nothing for the world.”

As Norway braced for Trump’s retaliation for snubbing him, POTUS instead threatened China with 100% tariffs after Beijing imposed new global restrictions on the use of rare earth minerals, which are vital for U.S. makers of chips and batteries.

But in contrast to his role as peacemaker abroad, Trump adamantly declined to make a deal with Democrats and began “substantial” layoffs of federal workers as the government shutdown entered its tenth day.

“The RIFs have begun,” White House budget director Russ Vought said on X, referring to “reduction in force” for workers affecting key departments including Interior, Homeland Security and Treasury.

Emboldened by polls suggesting people blamed Republicans more than the Democrats for the shutdown, Democrats accused the White House of being vindictive.

Meanwhile, Trump continued his war on “violence-ridden” Democratic-led cities even as judges weighed whether the president is exceeding his authority by deploying National Guard troops to quell demonstrations outside ICE immigration police facilities near Chicago and Portland.

While a judge in Chicago granted a temporary restraining order halting the Trump administration’s deployment of troops in Illinois for two weeks,  a three-judge panel in Oregon appeared likely to pause a lower court ruling blocking their deployment to Portland.

Meanwhile, in a tit for tat move, Trump’s handpicked Attorney General got a federal grand jury in Virginia to indict New York Attorney General Letitia James on charges of real estate fraud as she had done to him when he was out of power.

Her indictment came weeks after the indictment of another bête noire, former FBI director James Comey, on charges of lying to Congress and obstructing a congressional proceeding.

Trump who has been explicit about wanting his Justice Department to go after his political enemies has suggested, “I think there will be others” who could be charged, adding however that was only his “opinion.”

And as the Nobel eluded Trump, a follower, WomenForTrump@IStandWithTrump47, suggested “he deserves even more!” and “there should be a peace award named after him.”

In an explosion of memes making fun of Trump, one posted an AI generated picture of “Trump giving himself the Nobel Peace Prize after, ‘solving,’ all of our problems in ways people, ‘have never seen before.’”

Trump  may or may not get a peace prize named after him, but the U.S. Mint is said to be considering issuing a commemorative $1 coin in honor of America’s 250th birthday in 2026, featuring a portrait of  the President.

“No fake news here,” US Treasurer Brandon Beach posted on X in response to images of the coin on X even though it’s against U.S. law to display the image of a sitting president or living former president on coins. But who cares!

The draft images show Trump’s side profile on the front with “Liberty” at the top, “In God we Trust” on the bottom and the dates 1776 and 2026.

On the reverse is the famous image of Trump raising his fist after the Butler, Pennsylvania, assassination attempt, with the words “FIGHT FIGHT FIGHT” at the top and an American flag billowing behind his head.

It’s not clear whether the controversial coin design will be minted, but if it does it would in a way portray Trump’s dueling personas – peacemaker abroad, revenger at home!
