Usha Vance steps into the spotlight at the Republican National Convention
Usha Vance, the wife of Trump’s vice presidential pick J.D. Vance, made a striking introduction to the world on Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention. With grace and confidence, she presented her husband as a dedicated family man and a candidate with strong values.
Dressed in a resplendent blue ensemble, Usha spoke about her husband’s qualities, painting a picture of J.D. Vance as a loving husband and father who values family traditions and simple joys like playing with puppies and watching movies.
“What could I say that hasn’t already been said before? After all, the man was already the subject of an Iron Howard movie,” she said. “JD has shared much of his life through his own eloquent words in his book ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ during his Senate campaign, and now as a sitting United States Senator.”
Her narrative included an anecdote about their first meeting and a glimpse into their life together, emphasizing their tight-knit family. “I met JD in law school when he was fresh out of Ohio State, which he attended with the support of the GI Bill,” she said. “We were friends first because, I mean, who wouldn’t want to be friends with JD? He was then, as now, the most interesting person I knew—a working-class guy who had overcome childhood traumas that I could barely fathom to end up at Yale Law School.”
She continued, “A tough Marine who had served in Iraq but whose idea of a good time was playing with puppies and watching the movie “Babe.” The most determined person I knew with one overriding ambition: to become a husband and a father and to build the kind of tight-knit family that he had longed for as a child.”
These are standard remarks from a candidate’s spouse meant to humanize and endear their partner to the audience.
However, Usha didn’t shy away from discussing her Indian American immigrant heritage, a bold move that could resonate differently with her husband’s MAGA base. She shared anecdotes about how J.D. embraced her culture, learning to cook vegetarian food for her parents.
Usha said that her background is very different from JD’s. She pointed out that she grew up in San Diego in a middle-class community with two loving parents, both immigrants from India, and a wonderful sister. That JD and she could meet at all, let alone fall in love and marry, is a testament to this great country, and also a testament to JD, and it tells you something about who he is, she said.
“When JD met me, he approached our differences with curiosity and enthusiasm,” Usha said. “He wanted to know everything about me: where I came from, what my life had been like. Although he’s a meat-and-potatoes kind of guy, he adapted to my vegetarian diet and learned to cook food from my mother—Indian food. Before I knew it, he had become an integral part of my family, a person I could not imagine living without.”
Stepping into the limelight
With this speech, Usha Vance has stepped into the political spotlight, and her presence is expected to grow in the coming months. As the campaign progresses, America and the world will likely see more of her, especially if Trump secures another term. Media outlets have already begun to focus on her, with headlines like “Who is Usha Vance?” and “Meet J.D. Vance’s Indian American Wife” popping up across various platforms.
Last night, in Milwaukee, among those clapping for her speech were her husband and Trump himself.
