Vimal Patel: Democrat running for Alabama’s 2nd congressional district
Vimal Patel is one of the 13 candidates running for the Democratic Party nomination from the 2nd district.
Vimal Patel, an Indian American entrepreneur, is currently running for the Democratic nomination for the US Congress in Alabama’s recently redrawn 2nd district. This district now encompasses southern Alabama, including Montgomery County and a portion of Mobile County.
Patel, 39, is among 13 Democratic candidates who entered the race following a federal court’s approval of a new district map, which transformed the 2nd District from a traditionally Republican stronghold into a competitive battleground for Democrats. The primary election is scheduled for March 5th, with eight Republican candidates also in the running.
Reflecting on his experiences during the Great Recession over a decade ago, Patel told Al.com how those challenging times taught him essential skills for sustaining his family businesses. He believes that these skills can translate into effective problem-solving in Washington.
Patel is confident that his business acumen can contribute to addressing pressing issues such as the federal deficit and the long-term outlook for Social Security. He criticizes the perceived complacency of Washington officials in addressing these foundational problems.
