Impact to continue backing candidate positioned to become the first South Asian to represent Virginia in US Congress

Indian American Impact Fund, a leading community political advocacy organization, has congratulated  Virginia state senator Suhas Subramanyam on his impressive victory in the June 18 primary for the state’s 10th Congressional district.

“This milestone achievement positions Suhas to become the first South Asian to represent Virginia in the US Congress, serving a district with more than 65,000 South Asian residents with a victory in November,” it noted in a press release.

The Indian American attorney, who previously worked as a White House advisor under former President Barack Obama’s administration and a Capitol Hill staffer, won the tight 12-way Democratic primary with over 30% vote. He will face Republican Mike Clancy in the November general election.

“In the leadup to the primary, Impact invested over $600,000 in support of the Indian American candidate, including running a mail and digital outreach program.

The campaigns’ strategic focus on Suhas’s accomplishments and service in the district as both a state representative and state senator played a pivotal role in his victory,” the release stated.

“We are thrilled to celebrate Suhas Subramanyam’s victory in the Virginia congressional primary,” Chintan Patel, Indian American Impact Fund’s Executive Director, stated. “The voters of the tenth district recognized what we’ve known from the beginning: Suhas’s proven leadership and accomplishments are exactly what we need in Congress to champion reproductive rights, tackle climate change, improve access to high-quality healthcare, and invest in world-class education.”

“Suhas’s broad range of endorsements and support, including from outgoing Representative Jennifer Wexton, underscores his appeal across diverse voter bases and coalitions,” he stated. “We are excited to continue supporting him in the general election, confident he will join his South Asian American colleagues in Congress who are fighting for a more inclusive and multiracial democracy. His work will uplift all Virginians.”

Since its inception in 2016, Indian American Impact has endorsed and supported 166 candidates across the country, contributing to the historic rise of Indian and South Asian American representation in politics, the release stated.

Through strategic investments and grassroots organizing, Impact has marshaled upwards of $20 million to candidates and robust voter mobilization and policy advocacy efforts, amplifying the voices of South Asian Americans and driving positive change in communities nationwide, it stated.
