The Consulate General of India in New York, on Thursday, expressed grief on the death of Benigeri, who did his BTech from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani in Rajasthan, before coming to the US.

“Deeply saddened by the unfortunate demise of Mr. Shreyas Reddy Benigeri, a student of Indian origin in Ohio,” the Consulate said in a post on X. “Police investigation is underway. At this stage, foul play is not suspected.”

“The Consulate continues to remain in touch with the family and is extending all possible assistance to them,” it added.

Benigeri’s family in India has been informed about the tragedy and it is understood that his father is expected to arrive from India soon.

The incident comes days after another Indian-origin student, Neel Acharya, pursuing a double major at the prestigious Purdue University, was found dead on January 29 near the airport.

Authorities have ruled out any foul play in his death saying the autopsy revealed no signs of trauma on Acharya’s body. Tippecanoe County Coroner Carrie Costello said she met with the next of kin of Acharya on January 30 who confirmed his identity as a “19-year-old Purdue University student”.

“On January 29, 2024, a forensic autopsy was performed at the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office on Neel… There was no trauma or significant injuries found during the autopsy. No foul play is suspected at this time,” Costello said.

A report on the preliminary cause of death, toxicology and the preliminary manner of death are still pending. “This is an ongoing investigation with the Tippecanoe County Coroner’s Office and the Purdue University Police Department,” Costello added.

On January 16, 25-year-old Vivek Saini, an Indian American, was fatally attacked in Georgia state’s Lithonia city by a homeless drug addict.

In a similar incident, 18-year-old Indian American student, Akul B. Dhawan, was found dead outside the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) on January 20.

Dhawan reportedly went missing in the early hours of January 20 and was found dead 10 hours later on the back porch of a building near the university campus. His parents have blamed the school for negligence.
